What is BOTOX®?
BOTOX® has been used safely by millions for over 18 years. In fact, it is the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment performed in the Unites States and is the only treatment of its kind approved by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA). BOTOX® is a simple, non-surgical, physician-administered treatment that can temporarily smooth moderate to severe frown lines, forehead creases, and crow’s feet. It is also the treatment of choice for excessive sweating.

How it works:
Used in a medical setting as an injectable form of sterile, purified protein, small doses of BOTOX® are selectively injected into the treatment area(s). Once injected, Botox acts by temporarily blocking the nerve impulses that cause muscles to contract. By interfering with the underlying muscles' ability to contract, wrinkles relax, resulting in a smoother and more refreshed appearance. Since the treatment only relaxes the muscle beneath the line at the site of the injections, it has no effect on other elements of facial expression. It also has no effect on the sensory nerves, allowing for normal feeling in the treated areas.

What to expect:
The procedure is simple and painless and takes only a few minutes to perform. A few small injections are made to the treatment area(s) using a very small needle. Typically no anesthetic is needed. After the treatment, you may experience some bruising and minor swelling at the site of the injections(s), but these side effects typically subside within 24 hours or less. 1-2% of patients may also experience a slight droop in their eyebrow or eyelid. However, this should subside within 2-4 weeks. It is important to note that there have been no reports of permanent side effects with Botox Cosmetic for facial wrinkles. The effects of Botox are gradual and usually take one full week to notice the entire result of the treatment. Botox injections are recommended every 3-5 months to maintain results.
